Rankin, Church & Crowe - Sat. February 27, 2010
Our Next Main Series Concert
RCCFriends and colleagues Raylene Rankin, Cindy Church, and Susan Crowe, all award winning recording artists, bring their varied musical signatures to the stage in a mix of elegance and accessibility.

Folk, country, jazz, contemporary singer-songwriters are blended with a confident ease that makes for richly textured harmonies and a welcoming rapport that invites audiences in, and makes them want to stay.

Raylene Rankin is best known for her part of the Rankin Family and the Rankin Sisters, but her solo work has long stood apart on its own as solidly creative. She brings an unerring taste to her song choice, and as a writer, has an instinctive ear for what makes a song.

Cindy Church is simply one of the finest singers in Canada today. Over the last few decades, she has cemented her position in Canadian music history with her reputation as a vocalist and a writer.

Susan Crowe provides the final angle to complete the equation. She’s described as a writer’s writer, whose eyes and ears never wander far from the lyric. Hers is a graceful, well-designed writing, subtle in its craft and message, and varied in its style.

More information is available on our web site. Tickets are available online at our web site, by phone from 403-949-4114 or in person at Spirits West. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m.

Luke Doucet and the White Falcon, May 1, 2010
Concert Change for our final Main Series concert
Paul Quarrington, Canadian author, filmmaker, playwright, songwriter and the lead singer and guitarist for Porkbelly Futures, died on January 21, 2010. Porkbelly Futures is taking a touring break and will not be available for our May 1, 2010 concert. We have booked Luke Doucet and the White Falcon for the May 1, 2010 concert.

LD Canadian singer/songwriter Luke Doucet is a difficult figure to pin down. On the one hand, he is an acclaimed singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose songs sound like a prairie-bred and countrified Elliott Smith; on the other, he spent several years as the leader of the spacy neo-psych rockers Veal, Vancouver's answer to the Flaming Lips.

A proud and vocal member of Canada's exploding indie music scene, Doucet also pays the bills as a studio musician and producer for decidedly non-indie acts like Sarah McLachlan and Chantal Kreviazuk. Doucet was born and raised in Manitoba, where he initially planned to become a lawyer before the guitar became his primary obsession. He moved to Vancouver and formed Veal in the mid-'90s, when bands such as Zumpano and Cub were making the coastal city Canada's primary indie pop mecca.

Performing with Luke will be his wife Melissa McClelland of whom the Globe and Mail said: “unforgettable... a coolly expressive singer, a gorgeously gritty lyricist, and a vivid painter of pop noir.”

See our web site for more information and tickets.

Lorne Elliott - Saturday, April 17, 2010
Final Spotlight Series Concert in 2009-2010
LELorne started performing in 1974 as a folk musician in East Coast Canada. At the same time he kept writing fiction as well as songs, monologues and one-liners. The outcome of such a training is a very special show of comedy and music, totally original, entertaining, up-lifting and foolish enough to make everybody laugh. Along with his unique and wacky performance style, it is the timelessness of his material, joined with keen observations of today's trends that make Lorne Elliott's work so special.

Lorne Elliott has performed his one-man show in theatres, universities and clubs. He opened concerts for Rodney Dangerfield in New York City and Jay Leno in Montreal. He has made regular appearances at the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival since it started in 1986: each time his segments were selected for TV Specials, thanks to their universal quality. In Canada and the U.S. he has appeared on numerous talk shows and Variety shows.
