Welcome to the Bragg Creek Performing Arts Newsletter with information on
Bragg Creek Performing Arts' 31st season ... 2011 - 2012.
Summer is over! It must be time for Bragg Creek Performing Arts concerts
Catherine MacLellan - Sat. October 1, 2011
Another Maritime act graces our stage
It
is Catherine MacLellan's voice that strikes you first. Pure and haunting, it
caresses softly, insinuating itself into your heart, and just won't let go.
Then, the subtle strengths of her deeply confessional, powerfully poetic songs
emerge, revealing hidden layers with every listen.
MacLellan's immense vocal and songwriting talents are no secret to music lovers
in the Maritimes. Her potential was first displayed in the group The New Drifts
and then on her 2004 solo debut Dark Dream Midnight.
The best songwriters are able to give their introspection and soul-searching a
universal resonance, a gift MacLellan displays here. "I definitely write about
my personal experience, and I find people seem to respond by relating it to
their own personal situations. That way, the songs are not necessarily just
about me, and that's what you aim for," she observes astutely. This is a
characteristic of the work of many of the singer/songwriters Catherine cites as
influences and inspirations, artists such as Joni Mitchell, Nanci Griffith,
Townes Van Zandt, and her East Coast peer, Julie Doiron.
A young Catherine MacLellan did not have to look far for inspiration and
insight into the creative process. She's the daughter of Canadian music legend,
singer/songwriter Gene MacLellan, the writer of such huge international 70s hit
songs as "Snowbird" (the Anne Murray classic) and "Put Your Hand In The Hand"
(Ocean). He died when Catherine had just entered her teens, but his influence
was profound. "I grew up watching him write songs in the living room with pen
and paper or with a guitar on his lap. That was what I thought you were supposed
to do, and eventually I started doing it. Before I could even play guitar, I
wrote these awful songs about stupid things and I'd sing melodies." Gene helped
wean his daughter away from an early infatuation with bad 80s pop. "He'd buy me
tapes of the Beatles, Eric Clapton, and The Band, going 'you have to listen to
this.' I'm glad he did. I am really proud to be his daughter and to be able to
follow a little in his footsteps. He was a fantastic songwriter and that's
really cool."
Catherine's performance will start at 8:30 p.m. Don't miss our opening act,
the Youth Singers of Calgary who will start at 7:45 on October 1. Tickets are
available
online, from Spirits West, Bragg Creek Centre or from our Ticket Hotline
403-949-4114.
Youth Singers of Calgary Open on October 1
Youth Singers of Calgary will open for Catherine MacLellan starting at 7:45 p.m.
This
semi-professional ensemble of energetic young performers are selected from Youth
Singers of Calgary’s college and careers division. These talented and dynamic
singers, many who have been with Youth Singers for 10 plus years, truly are
“triple threat” singers, dancers and actors. They presents the top repertoire
incorporating full choreography and dance elements as made popular by the hit
show “Glee”.
Each Youth Singers performance is an opportunity to see the very best of the
best in pop, show choir, Broadway and movie music. Not to be missed, these
singers are charismatic and know how to draw an audience in. Most of all they
love what they do and are truly joyous in their performance. They are guaranteed
to leave every audience cheering for more.
Soaring Strings Performs at First Dinner Series
Saturday October 29, 2011. Dinner starts at 6:30 pm with the Concert at 8 pm
Cellist Sébastien Lépine and violinist Antoine Bareil offer an exciting trip off
the beaten path of classical music. In a breathtakingly virtuosic concert titled
Soaring Strings, the two sophisticated performers revisit works by some
of the most prominent modern composers and surprise the audience with a few of
their own compositions. Though they remain true to the strict format of a
classical recital, Bareil and Lépine still manage to put on a highly
entertaining show, adding a hint of humour, inventiveness and extravagance
between pieces. While Bareil reveals the exquisite tones of a Vuillaume violin,
Lépine, who has the exceptional fortune of playing on a Stradivarius cello—less
than thirty remain in the world—offers those present the unique opportunity to
hear the inimitable sounds of this legendary instrument (both instruments have
been generously lent by Canimex).
